Former scholarship student gives to Oxford

LONDON, July 12 (UPI) -- A venture capitalist who attended Oxford on a scholarship has given the leading British university its largest donation ever to help other poor students.

The university announced Michael Moritz's 75 million-pound ($116 million) donation Wednesday at a news conference in London, The Independent reported. Moritz's gift will allow students from families with incomes below 16,000 pounds ($25,000) a year to attend Oxford at the old rate of tuition before it was tripled.

Moritz, from a family that came to Britain to escape the Nazis, attended a comprehensive school in Cardiff and won admission to Christ Church College, Oxford.

"I would not be here if it were not for the kindness of strangers," he said.

The chairman of Sequoia Capital, Moritz now lives in San Francisco with his wife, novelist Harriet Heyman. The scholarships will be known as the Moritz-Heyman Scholarships.
