BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 11 (UPI) -- The Lebanese Army Wednesday beefed up its presence, reinforcing its positions along the Syrian border, Lebanese security sources told The Daily Star.

The Cabinet approved a plan to boost the military presence along the border with Syria and emphasized the need to take all necessary measures to control border areas following repeated Syrian incursions and cross-border shelling, the newspaper said.

More than 20 shells fell on Lebanese villages near the border Monday in the latest incident, the paper said. There also have been several incidents of gunfire from the Syrian side of the border, injuring Lebanese civilians.
