BELGRADE, Serbia, July 10 (UPI) -- Twelve people have been indicted for allegedly setting fire to the U.S. Embassy in Serbia in 2008.

The fire was set after after a rally in Belgrade protesting the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo, Tanjug reported.

The suspects are accused of throwing stones, flares and other objects and smashing doors and windows at the embassy Feb. 21, 2008.

They have been charged with public endangerment, said Vlado Dordevic, the head of Serbia's public prosecutor's cabinet.

Dordevic said the contents of the indictment would be disclosed later.

Tanjug said the prosecution gathered evidence for more than a year, including recordings from embassies that were used to identify suspects.
