GUJRAT, Pakistan, July 9 (UPI) -- An attack Monday on a Pakistani army camp in Gujrat left at least seven soldiers and one police officer dead, officials said.

The armed attackers assaulted the camp near the Chanab River, killing seven people at the scene and wounding three others, Geo News reported. The eighth victim died of his wounds later in a hospital.

A search was called to find the attackers, who fled after the incident, officials said.

Officials said three other people were shot and wounded.

The attackers also planted a time-triggered explosive, which detonated but did not cause injuries, Pakistani news agency INP reported.

The army camp was established a month ago in Punjab province to search for the body of an army officer who disappeared in a helicopter crash.
