14 bodies recovered from China mudslide

CHENGDU, China, July 9 (UPI) -- Fourteen bodies from a June 28 mudslide triggered by rain in southwest China were recovered by rescuers and 26 remain missing, authorities said Monday.

Rescuers pulled 12 bodies out of the Jinsha River in southwest China's Sichuan province at 6 p.m. Sunday and found two more in the area, sources with the rescue commanding center told Xinhua.

The mudslide occurred at a construction zone of the Baihetan Hydropower Station of China Three Gorges Corp. in Ningnan county, Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture.

Those who are dead and missing were station workers and family members who had been living in a three-story building.

Rescuers were continuing to search for the missing, who are believed to have been washed into the Jinsha River, a major headwater stream of the Yangtze River, the country's longest waterway.

The identities of five of the 14 people whose bodies were found have been confirmed, Xinhua said.
