Rescued RAF airman dies day after crash

INVERNESS, Scotland, July 5 (UPI) -- The death toll from a collision between two British military jets off the Scottish coast rose to three when one of two rescued airmen died, officials said.

The only known survivor of Tuesday's crash was reported to be in serious but stable condition at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, The Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.

The Royal Air Force said the search for two missing fliers, suspended because of bad weather, is now a recovery operation.

"We must be realistic given the length of time that has elapsed since the incident, there is no expectation of recovering missing personnel alive," Group Capt. Ian Gale of RAF Lossiemouth said.

The two Tornado GR4 bombers collided over the Moray Firth in northeastern Scotland. Searchers found wreckage from one plane and rescued the pilot and navigator but there was no sign of the other one or its two-man crew.

Crashes during training exercises out of Lossiemouth have claimed five lives in the past three years with the loss of four planes.
