Montreal party brawl results in 14 arrests

MONTREAL, July 4 (UPI) -- An early morning party brawl in Montreal Wednesday resulted in an injured police officer and 14 arrests of youths under the age of 20, police said.

Police were called soon after midnight about loud fighting among some 20 people "in the basement of a small retail business," police spokesman Simon Delorme told The (Montreal) Gazette.

An unidentified 36-year-old policewoman suffered a serious, but non-life threatening head injury when someone smashed her head into a concrete pillar during the brawl, the newspaper said.

Police called in for backup from the fire department for crowd control when a second round of fighting broke out after their arrival, the QMI Agency said.

Police said the 14 people charged ranged in age from 16 to 20 and were suspected of being part of gangs.

Investigators said they found evidence of illegal gambling in the basement and more charges were being considered Wednesday.
