2 RAF jets crash in flight near Scotland

INVERNESS, Scotland, July 4 (UPI) -- Two airmen were feared dead and two were rescued after two British military jets crashed off Scotland in what officials suspect was an in-flight collision.

The Royal Air Force said the crash occurred Tuesday in bad weather over the Moray Firth in northeast Scotland, The Sun reported. The GR4 Tornado bombers were based at RAF Lossiemouth.

Officials said wreckage was spotted and two airmen were pulled from the sea. One jet was classified as "missing" because investigators could not determine if the wreckage came from both planes.

"So far the best guess is that these two aircraft suffered a catastrophic mid-air collision and both hit the sea," a defense source told The Sun.

Both jets were involved in a training exercise designed to simulate a bombing run. Both carry a pilot and navigator.

An RAF rescue helicopter picked up two men. They were flown to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

The search for the other men was suspended at about 7:30 p.m. because of bad conditions. It was expected to resume Wednesday.
