VATICAN CITY, June 28 (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI is planning to beatify slain anti-Mafia Italian priest Giuseppe "Pino" Puglisi, Vatican sources told the Italian news agency ANSA.

Benedict allowed the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints Thursday to designate Puglisi a martyr, ANSA reported.

Puglisi was killed by the Mafia in 1993 on his 56th birthday in Palermo, Sicily.
