Canadian Conservatives not hot in poll

OTTAWA, June 27 (UPI) -- Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party are running at a 49 percent disapproval rate in the most recent national poll.

The survey of 1,008 adults conducted last week by Abacus Data for the QMI agency found 49 percent of voters disapproved of the Conservative government and the same number disapproved of the prime minister.

The poll found 34 percent gave full approval to the party, while 35 percent felt positively about Harper himself.

With regard to opposition parties, the Conservatives were tied with the socialist New Democratic Party at 35 percent, while the once mighty and now-decimated Liberals had 20 percent support across the country.

Both the NDP and Liberals foundered and had interim leaders after the May 2011 election that gave Harper's former minority government a solid majority. The NDP has elected Montreal Member of Parliament Thomas Mulcair as leader, but the Liberals are still under interim leadership.

The poll had a 3.1 percent margin of error, Abacus said.
