EDMONTON, Alberta, June 26 (UPI) -- A Canadian armored truck security guard who was the only survivor of a deadly armed robbery in Edmonton, Alberta, has emerged from a coma, his fiancee said.
Matthew Schumann, 25, was shot once in the head June 15 as he serviced cash dispensing machines at the University of Alberta.
Three of his G4S security co-workers died instantly in the robbery.
In a statement, his fiancee Jennifer who didn't want her last name used, said doctors had removed Schumann from an induced coma and he was undergoing physiotherapy to regain mobility skills, the Edmonton Sun reported.
"He recognizes his family and was overwhelmed with joy to see our 2-year-old son for the first time last night since the incident," the woman's statement said.
Some 36 hours after the massacre, U.S. border guards arrested the sole suspect, 21-year-old G4S guard Travis Baumgartner at a Washington-British Columbia border crossing.
He was unarmed, had no passport and had a bag with $330,000 in cash in his mother's pick-up truck.
He is scheduled to appear in court July 5 to face three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and four counts of robbery with a firearm, the Sun said.
