MEXICO CITY, June 25 (UPI) -- Three federal police officers were killed Monday in a shootout with what authorities said were suspected drug traffickers at Mexico City International Airport.
Police were in the process of arresting suspected traffickers at about 9 a.m. local time when the suspects, who were described by a witness as wearing uniforms, started shooting at police, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Two officers were pronounced dead at the scene and a third died later, police said.
Witnesses said two gunmen fled. There was no official word on whether any of the gunmen were arrested or killed in the shootout at what is also known as Benito Juarez International Airport.
No civilians were injured in the shootout, the Times said.
An airport spokesman said the shooting did not affect airline operations.
