In a plea to the average German citizen, Monti denied that easing of debt service amounts to subsidizing lavish Italian lifestyles, Italy's ANSA news agency reported Friday.
"Dear Herr Muller, relax, because you are not maintaining an excessive lifestyle by the Italians," Monti said in an interview with a German daily.
He said "virtuous" countries must give ground on austerity policies so marks can become more sustainable in terms of interest rates.
Otherwise, he cautioned, budding euro skepticism in Italy would get even worse.
His remarks were made before Friday's economic summit in Rome for Italian, German, French and Spanish leaders.
