BEIJING, June 22 (UPI) -- China's Ministry of Railways said it added 196 trains to accommodate the travel rush for the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday.

The ministry said in a statement the trains were added Thursday to prepare for the demand for transportation during the holiday, which started Friday and runs through Sunday, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.

The ministry said it expects 6.75 million people to ride trains on Friday, up 4.7 percent from last year, with an average of 6.1 million passengers for the weekend, up 5 percent from last year.

The Dragon Boat Festival celebrates ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan. The celebration includes eating rice dumplings, drinking wine and racing dragon boats.
