Man charged for cutting wife's lip off

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 21 (UPI) -- A 52-year-old professor in Stockholm, Sweden, was charged Thursday for allegedly cutting his wife's lower lip and eating it, prosecutors said.

The man, whose name was not reported, allegedly attacked his wife in May after she requested a divorce, the Swedish news agency TT reported.

"He did it so that she would never be able to kiss again and said 'I'll get four years, but you're getting a life sentence,'" said prosecutor Jakob Holmberg.

Holmberg said the man, a professor and researcher at the Karolinska Institute, waited until his wife was asleep before taking a scalpel to her face and cutting off her lower lip. He also cut her arms during the attack, Holmberg said.

Prosecutors originally classified the attack as attempted murder, but lowered the charges after the man confessed to police.

"He helped her call police and remained there until help arrived," Holmberg said.

The man faces up to 10 years in prison if he is convicted for the attack.
