Iran nuclear program talks at a standstill

MOSCOW, June 21 (UPI) -- Nuclear talks in Moscow between Iran and six world powers appear to be at a standstill, Iranian officials said.

Iranian newspapers say Israel sabotaged efforts by the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany to reach an agreement with Iran on its uranium enrichment program and allow greater United Nations scrutiny of the effort, The New York Times said Thursday.

"The American government ... is trapped by Israeli demands," the hard-line Javan Daily newspaper said. "Westerners are in need of negotiations and its continuation regardless of the possible results.

"In case the negotiations fail, Iran does not have anything to lose while America and Europe should be prepared for the consequences of such a failure," Javan Daily said.

Israel has implied it is willing to attack Iran to stop the development of nuclear weapons, the Times said.

Iran is in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions demanding that it suspend uranium enrichment and hasn't assured the international community its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.
