Neither of the military officials -- identified as Lt. Gen. Ali Ghaidan, commander of the Iraqi army's ground forces, and Abdul Ameer al-Zaidi, commander of Diyala military operations -- was killed, although officials said at least three of Ghaidan's guards died.

Security officials said they think al-Qaida in Iraq was responsible for the attack.

Attacks last Wednesday against primarily Shiite pilgrims killed nearly 100 people, wounding hundreds more and raising the possibility of renewed sectarian violence.
