42 injured in Turkish prison fire

SANLIURFA, Turkey, June 19 (UPI) -- At least 42 people were injured Monday when a second fire broke out in a Turkish prison where 13 inmates died Saturday, officials said.

The cause of Monday's fire in the Sanliurfa prison's juvenile ward is under investigation, officials told Today's Zaman. Gov. Celalletin Guvenc said guards evacuated 60 to 70 inmates during the fire but were returned to their cells when the fire was brought under control. He denied media reports of rioting inside the prison.

There were also media reports tear gas was used to disperse a crowd of family members protesting outside the prison. Today's Zaman said relatives were angered by reports of prison negligence in handling the recent fires.

One person was in critical condition following Monday's fire, the governor said.

Today's Zaman said inmates in Turkish prison have been known to set their beds on fire to protest poor prison conditions.The Sanliurfa prison was built to house about 600 inmates but had more than 1,000 prisoners.
