ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia, June 17 (UPI) -- U.S. border officials in Washington State arrested the key Canadian suspect in a triple homicide and armored truck robbery in Edmonton, Alberta.
Tom Schreiber with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. he was baffled as to why 21-year-old Travis Baumgartner would drive up to the border knowing he was the subject of a manhunt.
"Sometimes you have to scratch your head and wonder why people would knowingly come up and make contact with law enforcement," Schreiber said.
A gunman opened fire on a crew of armored car staff at the University of Alberta Friday, killing two males and a female guard and critically injuring a fourth.
Before Baumgartner's car even reached the customs and immigration booth at Lynden, Wash., Saturday, a license plate scanner alerted officials the occupant was wanted and possibly armed.
Border staff arrested Baumgartner and found more than $330,000 in cash in the car, which was registered under his mother's name, the CBC said. No weapons were found.
Baumgartner was employed by the armored car service targeted in the heist.
