Earthquake shakes the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines, June 17 (UPI) -- Manila and surrounding areas of the Philippine island Luzon were shaken by a 6-magnitude earthquake Sunday, seismologists said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake struck at 6:18 a.m. local time, and was followed by three aftershocks of up to 3.3-magnitude, the Philippine Star reported. The epicenter of the shaking was about 50 miles southwest of Candelaria in Zambales province, the newspaper said.

GMA News reported officials said no damage or tsunami were expected from the quake.

The island of Mindanao was hit by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake Friday.
