Rio Conference talks move forward

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 16 (UPI) -- Brazil's foreign minister said Saturday negotiations on the final document of the Rio+20 Conference were entering a new stage.

Antonio Patriota told reporters in Rio de Janeiro more than 100 negotiators representing 193 United Nations member states had divided into 10 groups to hammer out consensuses on various topics related to the Rio sustainability conference.

Topics include goals for food, water, sustainability, the oceans and other areas, Prensa Latina reported.

Patriota said the groups would meet over the next three days to finally reach an agreement on the final document, which would replace the current Millennium Development Goals document, which was adopted by the U.N. in 2000 and expires in 2015.

Two previous conferences in New York failed to produce a new agreement, Prensa Latina said.
