U.S. nuns have 'open meeting' at Vatican

VATICAN CITY, June 12 (UPI) -- The Leadership Conference of Women Religious said it had an "open meeting" at the Vatican Tuesday with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

LCWR President Sister Pat Farrell and Executive Director Sister Janet Mock met with Cardinal William Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Archbishop Peter Sartain, the LCWR said in a release.

"It was an open meeting and we were able to directly express our concerns to Cardinal Levada and Archbishop Sartain," Farrell said in a release.

"Sister Pat and Sister Janet will now return to the United States to discuss the meeting later this week with the LCWR board. As previously stated, the conference will gather its members in regional meetings and in its August assembly to determine its course of action in response to the CDF assessment," the release said.

The Vatican had announced in April the LCWR would be reformed to ensure it follows Catholic teaching on abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality and women's ordination as priests.

The umbrella group, based in Maryland, represents about 80 percent of the estimated 57,000 U.S. Catholic sisters and nuns.

Among the most controversial issues in a Vatican "doctrinal assessment" were medical and sexual ethics in the United States, Catholic News Service reported.
