NASSAU, Bahamas, June 12 (UPI) -- At least 11 people died in the sinking of a vessel trying to travel from the northern Bahamas to the United States, police said.

Police said seven people were found alive, raising hopes more survivors would be found, The Nassau Guardian reported Monday.

The vessel carrying 28 people, believed to be from Haiti, left from near Treasure Cay on the Bahamian island of Abaco Sunday. Police said they believe the boat developed engine trouble and began taking on water near Crown Haven, also on Abaco.
