In remarks at the unveiling, U.S. Army Gen. James Thurman, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, noted the memorial is the first of its kind.

The Korean conflict lasted from June 1950 to July 1953. While an armistice was reached, the North and South still technically remain at war and the United States has about 28,500 troops stationed in the South.
