ROME, June 4 (UPI) -- Italian police broke up an international drug racket Monday in a large-scope operation against international drug trafficking, police said.

Police arrested dozens of Calabrian 'Ndrangheta mafia members across Europe as a result of the operation, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

The 'Ndrangheta faction in the northwestern Italian region of Piedmont was the central focus of the operation that brought cocaine to Italy from South America.

"Fleets of ships were used, and they were fully crewed," one police source said.

More than six tons of cocaine and $1.2 million from Swiss bank accounts were seized during the operation.
