U.S. drone attack kills 10 in Pakistan

June 3, 2012 at 8:33 AM   |   Comments

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, June 3 (UPI) -- Two unmanned U.S. aircraft fired missiles at suspected insurgents in northwestern Pakistan Sunday, killing at least 10 people, witnesses said.

The drones targeted a house with two missiles and another two at a nearby car in South Waziristan, near the border with Afghanistan, News Network International reported.

Two of the fatalities were suspected militants associated either with the Taliban or al-Qaida, the report said. At least 10 other people were injured by the blasts, which leveled the house and destroyed the car, witnesses said.

Local officials said eight of the dead were Pakistanis, but didn't provide the nationalities of the other two.

The drone strike was the sixth in the past 11 days, the news agency said.

There is longstanding tension between Washington and Islamabad over the drone attacks in the rugged and remote border area over the number of civilian casualties, along with the U.S. reluctance to inform Pakistan of its attack intentions.
