MILAN, Italy, June 3 (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI announced Sunday the next World Meeting of Families would take place in Philadelphia in 2015.

It will be the first time the triennial event has been held in the United States since it was created in 1994 by Pope John Paul II as a forum to help families around the world build a religious base for their lives.

"I send my warm greetings to Archbishop Charles Chaput and to the Catholics of that great city, and look forward to meeting them there along with numerous families from all around the world," the pope told a huge crowd at Bresso Park in Milan, Italy.

Benedict added that "God willing," he would attend the event, although he would be 88 by then, Catholic News Service said.
