Lebanon army separates dueling neighbors

TRIPOLI, Lebanon, June 3 (UPI) -- Gunfire continued in northern Lebanon Sunday after the army broke up a series of overnight clashes between supporters and opponents of Syria's government.

The trouble broke out Saturday night in the Lebanese city of Tripoli and claimed as many as 13 lives and left nearly 50 wounded, officials told The Daily Star of Lebanon.

The fighting was between residents of a neighborhood that opposes Syrian President Bashar Assad and another where his supporters are concentrated. The two enclaves are separated by a road known as Syria Street.

The Daily Star said the situation was bad enough that the army moved into the dividing line Sunday morning to restore order. Nevertheless, sporadic gunfire continued, wounding at least one person.

A similar outbreak of violence earlier this year resulted in 11 fatalities and more than 100 injuries.
