TORONTO, June 2 (UPI) -- A gunman opened fire in the food court at a Toronto mall Saturday evening, killing one person in an attack that left seven others injured, police said.
Police said the search of the Eaton Centre mall failed to turn up the shooter, who remained at large, the Toronto Star reported.
Police said one victim was in life-threatening condition and two were in critical condition, the newspaper said. The others were hurt when trampled or pushed as people sought safety during the 6:30 p.m. attack.
Bobby Umar, who was in the food court with his family, said he was sitting with his 3-year-old son while his wife took their 1-year-old daughter to a washroom when he heard several rapidly fired shots.
"I looked up and saw a guy, right in front of Szechuan [food stand] … . I pretty much grabbed my son and dove under the table," Umar said.
"He was asking what was that noise and what we were doing under the table and why was everyone running so fast. I said there was a bad man and he was being naughty."
Umar's wife was stuck inside the washroom for a time as security guards people to stay put.
When they were reunited, "she broke down crying," he said. "It was emotionally tense for her, too."
