Truck crashes, sheep thrown onto highway

MELBOURNE, June 1 (UPI) -- A truck carrying about 400 sheep crashed on an overpass and threw animals onto a busy highway in Melbourne, causing accidents and injury, police said.

Motorists said the scene was chaotic, with sheep hitting cars and wandering near the highway, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.

The truck overturned on an overpass over the Princes Freeway and ejected the animals, police said.

"We have one car that's rolled four times, three other cars that are extensively damaged from livestock falling through their windscreens and a truck hanging off the edge of a bridge," an ambulance spokesman said. "We are very fortunate we don't have far more human casualties out of this event. We do however have a large number of casualties in the sheep fraternity."

The number of sheep killed was not known. Rangers had to kill some animals that were severely injured.
