JUBA, South Sudan, May 30 (UPI) -- South Sudan says a recent human rights report issued by the United States unfairly accuses the government of failing to protect citizen rights.

The Sudan Tribune said South Sudan statesmen resent a report, released by the U.S. State Department, that accuses Juba of extrajudicial killings, torture, rape, and other inhumane treatment of civilians last year.

The report said Juba also failed to address the issues surrounding the 250,000 people displaced by clashes between the South Sudan army and Sudan Armed Forces.

South Sudan spokesman Barnaba Benjamin Marial described the report as a "mere concoction to tarnish the image of the country, less than a year after it attained independence," the newspaper said Wednesday.
