Court records detail Afridi judgment

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 30 (UPI) -- The Pakistani doctor who helped the United States learn where Osama bin Laden was hiding was jailed for alleged links to a militant group, court records show.

The BBC said the judgment against Shakil Afridi shows Afridi was convicted in a closed hearing under Pakistan's tribal justice system for providing support and medical treatment to members of the militant group, Lashkar-e-Islam.

The judgment says there is also evidence that he was involved with foreign intelligence agencies.

It was previously reported Afridi was sentenced to 33 years in jail for treason for conducting a fake vaccination campaign in Abbottabad that provided the United States with evidence bin Laden was living in a compound there.

The punishment prompted a U.S. Senate committee to vote to cut off $33 million in aid to Pakistan.

Whatever the official reason given, many in Pakistan believe Afridi was jailed for helping the CIA, the BBC reported.
