MIRANDOLA, Italy, May 30 (UPI) -- Aftershocks of a deadly 5.8-magnitude earthquake rattled northern Italy overnight, with 58 aftershocks felt in areas of the Emilia Romagna region.
Officials said the earthquake Tuesday killed at least 17 people and caused the collapse of many buildings already structurally weakened by a 6-magnitude earthquake 10 days ago. Another 350 people were wounded and more than 8,000 were displaced.
The epicenter of Tuesday morning's quake was in Mirandola in Modena province, about 25 miles from Bologna, officials said. The earthquake was felt in Turin, Milan, Venice, Florence and into Austria, il Giornale.it reported.
Witnesses said many people raced into the streets and phone networks were so overwhelmed that authorities asked cellphones be used only for emergencies.
The quake collapsed homes and churches, officials said. Emergency shelters were being set up in camps, at hotels and aboard trains.
"We have to start over again," said Finale Emilia Mayor Ferioli Fernando, who escaped from a kindergarten shortly before the building collapsed.
He declared June 4th as a day of mourning.
In Cavendish, rescuers said a woman survived after being trapped under rubble for 12 hours.
