CAIRO, May 29 (UPI) -- Protesters were attacked in Cairo's Tahrir Square after the headquarters of presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq were ransacked Monday night, witnesses said.

Shafiq, who served as prime minister when ousted President Hosni Mubarak was still in office, finished second in last week's presidential election and will face the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsy in a runoff.

Protesters coming from the direction of Tahrir Square were seen breaking into Shafiq's offices and setting fire to the building, witnesses told the Egypt Independent newspaper. The fire was quickly put out.

Safiq's supporters rallied outside the headquarters while hundreds of protesters led by former presidential candidate Khaled Ali marched in downtown Cairo, angry over Shafiq's possible return to power and alleged vote-rigging against third-place candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi, Ahram Online reported.

Ali told al-Jazeera television he was calling for an independent judicial commission to review possible election irregularities.

Protests were also reported Monday in Alexandria.
