DOHAN, Sudan, May 29 (UPI) -- Qatar called on world powers to provide Sudan with the necessary financial support to implement 2011 peace agreement signed with rebels in Darfur.
Qatari Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Mahmoud made his appeal for financial aid to Sudan while attending the third meeting of the High Follow-Up Committee for Peace in Darfur, held Monday in Doha.
Financial difficulties prevented Sudan from fulfilling its commitment to implement the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur, signed July 14.
The Sudan Tribune reported Tuesday al-Mahmoud told representatives of the U.N. Security Council and European Union they have to admit the "financial gap" and "extend a helping hand" to ensure the commitment of all the Sudanese parties to the peace pact in his address to the committee meeting Monday.
A donors' conference for Darfur held in 2010 ahead of the signing of the peace agreement failed to raise the required $850 million.
The Tribune said a-Mahmoud pledged $31 million toward the construction of health centers, schools and development projects in addition to the $6 million Qatar already donated to the newly established regional authority in Darfur.
