KHARTOUM, Sudan, May 28 (UPI) -- A spokesman for the Sudanese armed forces, Col. Khalid Sa'ad al-Sawarmi, denied allegations Khartoum was using cluster bombs in South Kordofan.
Human Rights Watch raised concerns over the use of cluster bombs in South Kordofan -- a state where rebel militias have fought against the Sudanese government since 2011 -- after the discovery of two unexploded bombs.
The use of cluster bombs is prohibited under the Convention on Cluster Munitions in May 2008. Sudan has yet to sign the pact.
"Whether or not we end up joining the international treaty that bans cluster bombs, the fact remains that we never use them in our military operations and we don't have them to begin with," the Sudan Tribune quoted al-Sawarmi as saying Monday.
