BRUSSELS, May 28 (UPI) -- The European Union has begun a major study of anti-Semitism in Europe, believed to be the first survey of its kind, the EU said Monday.

The examination is likely the first of its kind, the New York-based news service Jewish Telegraphic Agency said Monday, to ask Jews in 9 EU member states -- Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Romania, Sweden and the United Kingdom -- about their perceptions and experiences of anti-Semitism, hate speech and discrimination.

The online survey will "investigate first-hand examples of anti-Semitic harassment and violence, as well as the extent to which Jews feel safe and secure in Europe today," a statement from Iloannis Dimitrakopoulos, head of the EU Department of Equality and Citizens Rights, said.

Survey results will be published in 2013, the news agency reported.
