Opposition wants to enter talks with Juba

KHARTOUM, Sudan, May 27 (UPI) -- Sudan's main political opposition bloc told African Union mediator Thabo Mbeki it wished to attend talks with South Sudan, officials said.

Embroiled in a sovereignty dispute with South Sudan, Khartoum is to resume talks Tuesday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the leadership of the AU.

The Sudan Tribune said Sunday the National Consensus Forces -- the opposition bloc -- had sent a letter to Mbeki urging him to consider the party's inclusion "as a representative of the people."

"We insist on becoming a third party in any negotiations or dialogue," the Sudanese newspaper Al-Sahafah quoted NCF Chairman Abu Issa as saying.

The Sudan Tribune said the ruling National Congress Party cautiously welcomed the opposition initiative, stressing "any domestic contribution to the dialogue with South Sudan must be done according to national agendas."
