Bahrain stops Arabsat broadcast

MANAMA, Bahrain, May 27 (UPI) -- Bahrain will stop broadcasting its channels on Arabsat satellite starting June 1 in condemnation of Iran, the Information Affairs Authority said.

Angered by what it calls "a hostile media campaign by Iranian channels against Bahrain and Saudi Arabia," the government decided to suspend all activities with Arabsat.

The Information Affairs Authority announced the decision Saturday, saying, "No official measure had been taken on its requests against channels which interfered in Bahrain's internal affairs and promote sectarianism."

The IAA accused Tehran of inciting violence, racism and terrorism through its programs as well as "spreading lies and allegations against political and social leaders in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia."

"We have been contacting the organization since February 2011 to stop the transmission of these channels or prevent them from such abuses, but no action has been taken since then," the IAA said.
