May 24, 2012 at 11:50 AM

MADRID, May 24 (UPI) -- A 4-year-old boy survived a plunge from a 9th floor balcony in Madrid unharmed after tree branches broke his fall, officials said.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the boy's family's home in Madrid, ThinkSpain reported Thursday.

Relatives of the boy said he went out onto the balcony to reach something and then fell into a tree below.

Several witnesses said tree branches broke the child's fall and the emergency services reported that the child appears to have survived his fall with nothing but a slight head injury.
