Yemeni Jew fatally stabbed in Sanaa

SANAA, Yemen, May 23 (UPI) -- A Yemeni Jew was stabbed to death in Sawan Market in Sanaa Tuesday while purchasing qat, a mildly narcotic plant, authorities said.

Yemen Fox said the attacker came from behind, stabbing the victim identified as Aaron Zandani in the neck with a traditional Yemeni knife called a gambiya before running from the scene.

The suspected attacker was caught, interrogated by police officers and sent to a provisional detention center, awaiting a decision on charges from the district attorney's office, officials said.

Al-Masdar online said Wednesday a Jewish community which was forced as a result of the 2011 uprising to relocate in a northern district of Sanaa called on the government to ensure the protection of its people.

Mareb Press quoted Rabbi Moussa, the community's leader as saying "the government must apply the law of God and punish the criminal."

Rights groups in Sanaa urged the government to act on what they called "sectarian violence" by promoting tolerance and understanding in Yemen, the Socialist Forum said.
