Israel arrests 10 for organ trafficking

May 22, 2012 at 7:42 AM   |   Comments

JERUSALEM, May 22 (UPI) -- Ten people have been arrested in Israel on suspicion of human organ trafficking, police said.

The 10 taken into custody Tuesday are believed part of a ring that ran a network matching donors to those who required urgent transplants, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The investigation began after law enforcement officials abroad contacted Israeli police for assistance in shutting down the illegal operation.

A police spokesman said the actual transplants were carried out abroad but the group promised large amounts of cash to Israelis willing to sell their organs.

Charges against the traffickers included causing grievous bodily harm and tax evasion.
