PENUKONDA, India, May 22 (UPI) -- An express train rear-ended a cargo train at a railway station in India early Tuesday, killing 24 people and injuring some 40 others, police said.
The impact of the collision at Penukonda station in Andhra Pradesh caused four cars of the cargo train to derail and resulted in one of the cars catching fire, the Press Trust of India reported.
At least 16 of the dead, mostly women, burned to death, police said.
A railway spokesman said it appeared the driver of the express train overshot the signal.
Police filed charges against the express train driver and his assistant, who were both injured and taken to a hospital.
Railway and local police along with firefighters quickly brought the flames from the derailed rail car under control.
The Indian government has ordered an investigation.
