ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 21 (UPI) -- Efforts to extradite former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf from Britain have stalled over the possibility he could face the death penalty, officials said.
Musharraf has been living in London since after he resigned from office in 2008. He faces charges related to the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007.
The Express Tribune reported capital punishment is the main roadblock to efforts to complete extradition treaties with Britain and a number of other countries.
"Efforts to conclude extradition treaties with various countries are going on," Foreign Office representative Moazam Ali Khan, was quoted as saying. "Particularly, our focus is on Europe."
Bhutto died in an explosion and gunbattle Dec. 27, 2007, near Rawalpindi. Musharraf is accused of failing to provide adequate security for her.
