South Korean corruption investigation finds hidden billions

SEOUL, May 18 (UPI) -- Tens of billions of won have been discovered in a bank account linked to deceased South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun's older brother, prosecutors said Friday.

The discovery comes amid allegations Roh Geon-pyeong accepted $801,360 in bribes to influence the award of a land reclamation contract while his younger brother served as president.

Prosecutor Lee Joon-myung said he tracked the account activity for three years until May 2008.

"Prosecutors have found several tens of billions of won in a bank account owned by a person believed to be the elder Roh's money manager, while conducting an investigation into allegations of his bribery," Lee told Yonhap News Agency.

Roh's attorney promised to sue the prosecutor who leaked the information to the media.

Roh was convicted of accepting bribes in a 2006 corporate takeover, but was released from prison in 2010 under a presidential pardon.

Roh's younger brother, the former president, committed suicide in 2009 during a corruption investigation involving his family.
