CAIRO, May 15 (UPI) -- The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday voting is proceeding normally among Egyptians aboard casting their ballots in the nation's presidential election.

The ministry denied reports of fraud and vote-rigging in the voting at Egyptian embassies and consulates abroad, the Egypt Independent newspaper reported.

Ministry spokesperson Amr Roshdy said in a statement members of the Egyptian missions are striving to ensure the vote is clear and transparent.

About 500,000 expatriates in 166 countries have registered to vote. They're among 8 million Egyptians who live abroad.

Roshdy said some individual mistakes led to minor irregularities in voting but they did not constitute vote-rigging.

He said reports of voting irregularities would be submitted to the Presidential Elections Commission.

The Independent said the Egyptian Embassy in Washington discovered three forgery attempts among Egyptians who arrived at the embassy to vote even though they had also sent their votes through the mail.
