VILYUCHINSK, Russia, May 14 (UPI) -- A man died after being attacked by two bears in Russia's Far East, police said Monday.

The man was near a residential home near on the outskirts of the Far Eastern port of Vilyuchinsk when he was attacked, RIA Novosti reported.

Police tracked down the bears and killed them, officers said.

Local residents said they have seen a bear cub near the outskirts of the city. The area is being heavily patrolled to prevent more attacks.

This year, bears woke up from hibernation earlier than usual, the news report said, and with a lack of food, they are moving closer to cities.

Several bear attacks on people are reported in the region every year.
