ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 8 (UPI) -- Cameron Munter has told staff members in Islamabad he is leaving his position as U.S. ambassador to Pakistan this summer.

Munter, who has been in Pakistan since October 2010, will be departing after less than two years, while ambassadors normally serve for three, The Washington Post reported. He made the announcement to embassy staff Monday.

He has been in Pakistan during a time of rising tension with the United States fueled by the killing of Osama bin Laden a year ago, U.S. drone strikes and the killing of two Pakistanis by a former CIA contractor.

A veteran Foreign Service officer, Munter served as U.S. ambassador to Serbia from 2007 to 2009 and as an adviser to Ambassador Christopher Hill in Iraq. Previously, he had senior posts in Czechoslovakia and Poland.
