Sabahi aims to support Palestine

CAIRO, May 6 (UPI) -- Egyptian presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabahi of the Dignity Party said if elected, he would tear up Isreal's 1979 peace treaty with Egypt.

Sabahi said he would support the Palestinian resistance, and threatened to refuse to sign the credentials of Israel's ambassador if Israel tried to prevent Egypt from aiding Gaza. He said he would never recognize a Zionist nation that usurps Arab land.

In the interview with Iran's Fars News Agency, Sabahi said he supports an alliance between Egypt, Turkey and Iran, saying Egypt and Iran were victims of a U.S. plot. Al-Masry al-Youm also reported he intends to sever relations with Saudi Arabia if proper respect is not paid to the Egyptian people.

Sabahi founded the Nasserist Dignity Party in 1996 and was an opposition leader prior to the 2011 revolution. As a Nasserist, he ascribes to the nationalist political views of former Egyptian President Gamel Abdel Nasser.
