Tunisia fines TV boss for airing 'Persepolis'

TUNIS, Tunisia, May 3 (UPI) -- A television station boss was fined $1,617 for broadcasting a movie that includes a scene depicting Allah, a Tunisian court ruled Thursday.

Nabil Karoui was charged with blasphemy for his television station Nessma's decision to air the animated film "Persepolis" on Oct. 7, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The film, which is about Iran's 1979 revolution, offended many Muslims because of its depiction of Allah, which is forbidden in Islam.

Protests against Nessma ensued and Karoui's home was attacked by men carrying Molotov cocktails.

Earlier this week, Tunisia's national media and communication authority, INRIC, condemned "all attempts to terrorize media professionals," while the government called for "respect for sacred things."

A Tunisian court ruled against the TV station and imposed the $1,617 fine against Karoui.
